Ethereum Classic Labs (ETC) and Swarm Team to Solve Data Storage Issues On the Blockchain

Ethereum Classic Labs Swarm partnership

Ethereum Classic Labs have partnered with the Swarm team.  Since October 2019, Ethereum Classic Labs have been providing funding, project management, and development to support the Alpha and Beta release. Thus, playing their part in advancing decentralized storage and multi-chain support.

The collaborative partnership between Ethereum Classic Labs and the Swarm Team started at Devcon.  The Swarm decentralized storage network have launched its alpha network.

There is a detailed interview on the EVM61 Podcast with Viktor Tron, Team Lead of the Swarm Project with Steven Lohja of ETC Core.

The important growing pains in the blockchain industry is related to data-storage.  The data storage issue should be solved to disrupt any real-world industry. Ethereum classic design is good enough to store transactions. For now, it is not feasible to store reviews, health records or HD video.

In the past, centralized storage companies rent out servers for storing data.  People trust the company in the process of securing data. And the feasibility and security is dependent upon the security of the company itself.  The risk of hacking is still there.  Dapps have a similar problem, and it is not feasible to lose all data. Swarm is useful in this area.

James Wo, Founder and Chairman of ETC Labs expressed that Swarm deals with universal challenges in the blockchain technology with a focus on storage and storage specific solutions.  He further opined that with these problems being universal, the issues can be solved only with collaboration.

The blockchain ecosystem according to Wo is in need of multiple people working on it from different angles. He stated that Swarm is an incredible community, which has been interoperable from the beginning, therefore, sharing their commitment to multi-chain support.

Sydney Ifergan, the Crypto Expert tweeted:  “The future is about interoperability.  Ethereum Classic Labs understand it fairly well. Ultimately, all the blockchains have to collaborate.”

Ethereum Classic Labs (ETC) and Swarm Design Principles

In traditional blockchain storage, when a file is uploaded, it is submitted as a transaction, and provided with a unique hash, but in Swarm: “This data is stored on individual user’s storage devices across the Swarm network much like IPFS or BitTorrent.”

Further, Swarm is built with interoperability with Ethereum-based blockchain in mind, and therefore will be having an incentive mechanism to provide for economic feasibility.

Economic incentives are very important in a decentralized ecosystem. While Swarm took to ambitious goals of solving problems related to decentralized storage, they are providing a strong solution for messaging.  They are focusing on providing the whole set of primitives, which define web stack to be a decentralized application.

The design principles followed by Swarm are stability, scalability, security, and self-sustainability.  The Book of Swarm provides detailed description about the design and architecture of Swarm.
