David Vorick of Siacoin (SC) Skynet on Importance of using own Storage

David Vorick, the lead developer at Skynet, stated:  Skynet is a world where the user gets to decide what font their microblogging platform uses.

Those who do not know David Vorick have been active in the Bitcoin space since 2011. In 2014, he co-founded a decentralization-first startup called Nebulous Labs. His team has developed Sia’s fully decentralized cloud storage platform – a big step forward in cloud technology.

Ransomware attacks get a lot more difficult for attackers if every user owns their own Storage and if people are logging in using cryptographic seeds instead of username + password combinations. Skynet and MySky lay a solid foundation for a future without database breaches.

Further stated, the invention of the social network was humanity’s biggest evolutionary near-miss. Facebook’s platform has an enormous amount of latent power locked behind its APIs. If Facebook opens those APIs to the world, the world wins, but Facebook loses. Therefore they stay closed.

It’s distressing because Facebook isn’t the one that built its massive cache of social data. We did. We spent hundreds of hours combing through lists of friends, liking posts, wishing people happy birthdays. It’s our data, and we built it. So why does Facebook get all the rewards?

Community response:  Remember that Signal ad? I struggle to imagine how open API access to Facebook’s datasets results in anything that isn’t just very creepy. If I only have access to my creepy data, it becomes difficult to build anything social with much in the way of network effects.

David has previously expressed his alternative lines of thought like:  Is the government on our side? It’s revealing that the cybersecurity division of the US prefers to stockpile exploits that impact its citizens rather than disclose and repair them. A government that wanted to see its people live their best lives would not act this way.

The most significant difference between the Bitcoin community and the Ethereum community is their focus. For Ethereum, the central question is, “what can we do with this amazing technology?” For Bitcoin, the central question is, “how could someone else take this technology away from me?”

He also acknowledged, the software has this enormous dependency creep because there is no social standard for analyzing how toxic a project’s dependency set is. If we put some sort of score in place, there will be natural social pressure not to add frivolous dependencies.
