Simplifying the buzzwords.  A video, which is about the ignition (burning) of a Gun Powder Painting, has been tokenized as an NFT, and it sold for $2,500,000 USD.

The artist behind this NFT is Cai Guo Qiang, a Chinese artist who currently lives and works in New York City and New Jersey.

Cai’s work was featured in the 2016 Netflix documentary Sky Ladder: The Art of Cai Guo-Qiang, highlighting his work with fireworks, particularly his 1,650-foot ladder of gunpowder.

For those who are new:  Gunpowder is used to create artwork on canvas and wood. It is hailed to be modern art.  This gun uses electrostatic energy, thus making sure that the powder sticks to the selected surface.

The end result of a gun powder coating application is a complex, shiny, and smooth surface that can withstand substantial amounts of wear and tear. In addition, it’s uniformly thick at all points of the surface and possesses a clean, professional appearance.

Justin Sun of TRON (TRX) expressed:  Crazy Auction with a lot of unexpected competition.  Great to see artists like Cai Guo Qiang coming into the NFT space!

Cai Guo Qiang’s 1st NFT is named Transient Eternity, and the NFT auctioned for $2,500,000 USD after a lot of bidding war.  The Auction closed on http://trlab.com.  This event is considered to be a historic moment for the art communities.

Transient Eternity—101 Ignitions of Gunpowder Paintings contributed to TR Lab’s opening drop.  TRLabs partnered with Rockbund Art Museum (RAM) and invited artist Cai Guo-Qiang to create the Non-Fungible Token (NFT) project Transient Eternity—101 Ignitions of Gunpowder Paintings.

Beginning July 14, 2021, this artworks were featured in a 48-hour charity auction on the TR Lab platform (trlab.com) and are set to be on view until August 14, 2021.

Cai began working with gunpowder as his unique artistic medium in 1984. Over the decades, he has exhibited his gun powder art at major museums across the regions of the world and in different cultures.  He has since then created and presented several gunpowder paintings.

While the denotation happens in a blink, this painting is considered uniquely precious as the artwork’s moment of birth is regarded as a crucial part of the gunpowder paintings.

Transient Eternity transformed the “ignition moments” to NFT, thus making it possible to own a moment of ignition, which, subverted by the endurance of high technology and the blockchain, will be suspended in time.

The 100 ignition moments form a single NFT, while the 101st will be minted as an additional NFT—a small surprise for the NFT community.

These moments all come from Cai’s pieces during his recent Individual’s Journey through Western Art History.

Half of the auction proceeds from Transient Eternity are going to Rockbund Art Museum, at its 10th anniversary, to support the museum’s development and digital art research programs.

The other half will go to Cai Foundation to support Asian Cultural Council (ACC) Cai Fellowship Program, which funds young Chinese artists studying in the United States.

Cai Guo-Qiang watches the ignition of his gunpowder painting at the Salón de Reinos (Hall of Realms), Madrid, 2017.
