Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has laid out his vision for the future of the blockchain, focusing on significant upgrades that will enhance the network’s speed, security, and accessibility. After the successful transition from Proof of Work (Pow) to Proof of Stake (Pos) in 2022, Ethereum’s next phase of development looks to refine its scalability and inclusivity.
In a recent blog post, Buterin emphasized that while the Pos shift has improved the network in many ways, further changes are needed to keep up with Ethereum’s growing user base. He pointed to areas like transaction speed, staking accessibility, and network security as key areas of focus.
Ethereum’s current transaction confirmation times remain a challenge for users. On average, it takes about 15 minutes for a transaction to be fully confirmed, leading to network congestion and slower performance during peak periods. Buterin has proposed single-slot finality as a potential solution.
First discussed by Buterin in July 2024, single-slot finality could reduce confirmation times to just 12 seconds, drastically improving transaction speeds. The ability to finalize blocks so quickly would not only enhance the user experience but also improve the overall security of the network. Faster finality reduces the time during which a transaction can be reversed or tampered with, providing greater confidence in the blockchain’s reliability.
This development aims to make Ethereum more competitive as a decentralized platform, particularly in industries requiring rapid transaction processing, such as decentralized finance (De Fi) and gaming.
Another area Buterin is keen to improve is the accessibility of staking on the Ethereum network. Currently, users need to stake 32 ETH (over $83,000 at Ethereum’s current price of $2,600) to become a validator. This high threshold has created a barrier for smaller participants, concentrating validator control among larger, wealthier entities.
To democratize staking, Buterin has proposed lowering the minimum requirement to just 1 ETH, allowing more solo stakers to join the network. This would reduce centralization risks and encourage broader participation in Ethereum’s security and consensus processes.

As Ethereum grows, the security of the network becomes even more critical. Buterin highlighted the ongoing need for security improvements, with a particular focus on reducing the risk of Denial of Service (Dos) attacks.
In the current Pos system, validators responsible for proposing the next block are publicly known in advance, which allows bad actors to target them. Buterin has proposed a single secret leader election system to keep the identity of the block proposer hidden until the block is created, making it much harder for malicious entities to disrupt the network.
This approach would increase Ethereum’s resilience against attacks, ensuring a smoother and more secure experience for all participants.
Buterin’s vision is part of Ethereum’s broader roadmap toward Ethereum 2.0, which aims to create a more scalable, secure, and sustainable blockchain. The successful implementation of single-slot finality, lower staking requirements, and enhanced security measures will help Ethereum remain a leading platform in the blockchain ecosystem.
