Wondering why AvalancheGo v1.6.5 is not an Ordinary Release? For clarity, Avalanche is a young platform, but it offers many interesting and exciting opportunities to get engaged and participate in the new frontier of blockchains.
AVAX holders are incentivized to stake their tokens to secure Avalanche, while receiving a reward in return. Run an Avalanche node, stake your AVAX, and earn AVAX rewards.
Validators are crucial in securing the growing network. They need to be active to ensure smooth staking processes on the network.
Patrick O’Grady expressed: So how does it work? Other validators (on AvalancheGo v1.6.5) now periodically send their opinions of your uptime to you. Your validator then weights these opinions (based on stake) and computes an estimate.
If you are curious why your uptime is a certain value, you can call `info.peers` to get an idea of what each validator you are connected to believes your uptime is:
Other validators ONLY share their uptime estimate with YOU. Because your validator is the ONLY one with a ~global~ view of what everyone thinks of it, `info.uptime` is now the best estimator of the likelihood you’ll be rewarded (and it can ONLY be seen by you).
If you are concerned by your validator’s uptime, make sure to take a look at the Validator Health Check to debug issues and to subscribe to Validator Alerts to get an email if your validator goes offline.
Disclaimer 1: The “likelihood of reward” ESTIMATE is NOT a guarantee that your validator will be rewarded even if over 80%. This estimate is computed based ONLY on what your peers tell you they think your uptime is. If they don’t tell you the truth, the estimate will be off.
Disclaimer 2: Only validators on AvalancheGo v1.6.5 will respond with your uptime, so the estimate computed on your node is biased towards newly updated nodes.
Disclaimer 3: The estimator marks disconnected peers as voting with uptime 0 for your staking period. If your node is under-connected for a period of time (like on restart), the estimate of your uptime may temporarily be lower than what you expect.
If working with an L1 blockchain sounds interesting, we’re hiring for 13+ roles: Core Blockchain Engineer (Protocol/Networking); Full-Stack Engineer (bridging Web2 => Web3); SGX Bridge Engineer.
Community Response: Thank you for providing this. I still don’t understand how there is no official validator uptime consensus yet rewards are based on a specific uptime threshold. Can you address please.
