The artificial womb will arguably be the most promising and revolutionary technology in the next 20 years. It may first emerge as a complementary solution to the existing human system like the brain-computer interface.

While brain-computer interfaces are designed to help the disabled with person-computer communication, artificial wombs end premature babies’ deaths. Both technologies will eventually lead to a new society, a new future, and new possibilities.

Upon the tech tree, after the brain-computer interface, humanity’s next stop will undoubtedly be the metaverse, where carbon-based life and silicon-based civilization truly integrate.

 It will be a world with no gap between virtuality and reality. Such a world requires artificial wombs as its biological basis and socialized child-rearing on a higher level.

From the social point of view, our life in the future may not be too different from the world of The Matrix. Humans will live in a space that fuses reality and virtuality—reality will be virtual, and virtuality will be real.

Every individual in the future will be able to strip off the chains of the family, class, and nation and therefore be completely liberated.

Since the essence of a human being is nothing but their mind, when minds persist in the decentralized blockchain world, it will be impossible to destroy minds, life, or even decentralization in reality.  

Politically speaking, human society will see unprecedented integration in the short term, where the artificial womb and socialized child-rearing will transform families, the basic unit of society.

This combination will further alter the concepts constructed based on families such as class and nation. National borders will disappear, and the world will be more globalized than ever, giving birth to a world government or other supranational organizations.

 Here are some possible scenarios in the following two decades:  The low birth rate, as well as the slow population growth, is a practical challenge facing policymakers in all developed countries, which will escalate to an existential crisis that may result in the end of human existence in a matter of hundreds of years if the artificial womb cannot be a dream come true.

2nd, given the competition between nations, those who first resort to the artificial womb and socialized child-rearing will see a steep rise in their national strength, boosted by the swell of high-quality population.

In two to three decades, they may rise to become superpowers. Therefore, the victory of warfare in the 21st century lies not in weapons but in artificial wombs.

3rd, the artificial womb and socialized child-rearing can be achieved without substantial biotechnological breakthroughs. They previously came to a standstill mainly due to the lack of willingness, courage, and permission to push them forward despite their achievements.

4th, the world’s population is growing by less than half a million per day, a relatively low figure for large-scale production and technological advancement.

It can be foreseen that as the artificial womb technology matures, those born with artificial wombs will outnumber the ones from natural births within a brief period, making up the majority of the world’s population.

5th, the recent case of Liu Xuezhou and the victims of child abandonment and abduction have all spoken. Raising offspring is an undertaking with low efficiency and high cost for the less affluent families, and only a handful of them can fulfill this task effectively.
