Ethereum difficulty bomb is set to delay the major transition of the network to a more efficient energy system, by a little more time.
The difficulty bomb is a special code in Ethereum. This code quickly increases the computing difficulty of mining the underlying token, thus eventually making it impossible for the mining. The transition of the Ethereum network to a more efficient energy system will surely happen; however, some extra time and delay is the price.
The delay is frustrating to the community, but there is nothing that can be done about it.
If the difficulty bomb is allowed to run its course, this is indicative of the days of Merge setting in being just a few days that can be numbered. However, developers are planning to disable the difficulty bomb despite it taking its course this month. The developers will be disabling it and deploying it another time.
The expectation was for Merge to happen soon, and many did not expect any further delay. Developers have not given a particular date for Merge. However, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated that the Merge will happen as soon as August, provided there are no major issues. The decision to push back the difficulty bomb increases fears about the much-anticipated upgrade which will take more time considering the current scenario.
Going by the estimates of Vitalik’s statement, the Merge could be pushed back to September or October if the developers will need more time.
However, in a recent call, reportedly, developers seemed to have stated that the difficulty bomb will not have any implications on the timing of the Merge.
Worries are brewing about developer burnout if they are going to rush to get the Merge done without delaying the difficulty bomb for a reasonable amount of time.
Too much pressure pushes the teams to burn out and that is a situation which the developers are not willing to be pushed to. If the current difficult bomb is delayed it should be a realistic delay, thus maintaining a sense of urgency.
The news about the delay is messing up with the excitement of the Merge. The developer community had a reason to be excited about the upgrade of Ropsten as it is one of the oldest testnet for Ethereum. Ropsten is able to provide with one of the most realistic technical environments to test out the Merge. This environment is where they can test out the Merge, check for bugs and evaluate the outcome of the final process.
Developers have uncovered several issues in the test so far. They are not quite at the mainnet code.
