The proposal suggests gradually migrating funds to quantum-resistant outputs over several years while phasing out legacy ECDSA signatures.
The BIP also introduces the concept of a “failsafe” bridge to the qBTC sidechain, allowing users immediate access to quantum-secure transactions if quantum threats accelerate faster than expected.
Lopp emphasized the need for proactive action:
“I have argued for some time that the Bitcoin ecosystem must act proactively on quantum risk rather than react once keys are being compromised.”
