In a monumental stride forward, Ripple, the prominent crypto-payments firm, has attained a significant milestone with its Irish subsidiary, Ripple Markets Ireland Limited, securing approval from the Central Bank of Ireland. This endorsement marks an expansion of Ripple’s crypto footprint in Europe and signifies its pivotal entry into the region’s financial landscape.

The approval, granted on December 19, permits Ripple to operate as a registered Virtual Asset Service Provider in Ireland. This achievement holds substantial implications, positioning Ripple to offer digital asset services not only in Ireland but also across the wider European Economic Area once the Markets in Crypto Assets Regulation (MiCA) comes into effect by the end of 2024.

Stuart Alderoty, Ripple’s General Counsel, expressed optimism about the company’s future endeavors. He highlighted the potential to extend their European license to encompass the 27 states within the bloc, contingent upon acquiring further necessary approvals.

Eric van Miltenburg, Ripple’s Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, lauded this regulatory milestone, affirming, “The Central Bank of Ireland’s addition of Ripple Markets to its list of registered Virtual Asset Service Providers is a significant step forward for our business in the region.”

Ripple strategically chose Ireland as its primary base for EU regulation, recognizing the country’s supportive stance toward the virtual assets industry. Van Miltenburg reiterated this sentiment, stating, “Ireland has positioned itself as a supportive jurisdiction for the virtual assets industry and consequently as a great place for businesses like Ripple’s to operate.”

The move aligns with Ripple’s continuous efforts to navigate regulatory landscapes worldwide. Notably, this recent achievement in Ireland follows Ripple Markets APAC Pte Ltd securing a Major Payments Institution license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore in October.

Ireland’s emergence as a favored destination for crypto firms has been steadily gaining traction. Earlier, Coinbase designated Ireland as its EU hub, with Gemini also expanding its operations to the country. The Central Bank of Ireland’s register now boasts 11 firms, including Kraken’s Payward Ltd, Moonpay, and Zodia Markets, among others.

However, Ripple has faced regulatory challenges in the past, notably from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC filed a lawsuit against Ripple in 2020, alleging the sale of XRP tokens as unregistered securities. Despite legal hurdles, recent developments have brought some clarity. In a significant ruling earlier this year, Judge Analisa Torres deemed XRP not a security on the secondary market.

Ireland’s proactive stance in fostering an environment conducive to fintech innovation played a pivotal role in Ripple’s decision to establish its Dublin office back in 2022. The Central Bank of Ireland’s establishment of an Innovation Hub in 2018 further facilitated a dynamic interaction platform between fintech entities and regulatory authorities, fostering a supportive ecosystem for firms like Ripple.

This recent approval aligns with Ireland’s emergence as a preferred destination for cryptocurrency firms. In October 2022, Coinbase, a prominent crypto exchange, designated Ireland as its EU hub, following its approval as a VASP in the country. Gemini, another leading crypto exchange and Coinbase’s competitor, also expanded its operations to Ireland, securing the first VASP registration in the country.

The Central Bank of Ireland’s register currently boasts 11 firms, including Kraken’s Payward Ltd, Moonpay, and Zodia Markets, a digital asset exchange and brokerage platform backed by Standard Chartered.

While Ripple celebrates this European milestone, it continues to navigate regulatory landscapes worldwide. Notably, in November, the Dubai Financial Services Authority sanctioned the use of Ripple-connected digital asset XRP within the Dubai International Financial Centre, permitting licensed virtual asset firms within the economic zone to integrate XRP into their services.

This regulatory win marks a turning point for Ripple, signaling its commitment to compliance and its mission to navigate the evolving crypto regulatory landscape. The company’s persistence in obtaining licenses and approvals globally underscores its dedication to fostering trust and confidence within the digital asset, payments, and fintech ecosystems.

In conclusion, Ripple’s approval as a Virtual Asset Service Provider by the Central Bank of Ireland signifies a pivotal moment for the company’s European expansion. This regulatory win not only propels Ripple’s presence but also underlines Ireland’s growing significance as a nurturing ground for the burgeoning fintech and crypto industry.
