SBI Holdings made it official on July 28. SBI Security Solutions is now SBI Digital Practice Co. Ltd., renamed effective June 22, and it’s got a very different job to do.

The new entity sits in Roppongi, Tokyo, led by Ryo Shimotsu, and SBI keeps full ownership. But the mission has shifted hard. SBI Digital Practice will build financial infrastructure and applications on the Canton Network — think regulatory compliance tools, cross-border transaction systems, and the kind of institutional plumbing that banks actually need before they’ll touch blockchain. The company wants to help banks and financial institutions adopt blockchain while staying inside market regulations, which is basically the whole game right now for anyone trying to sell this stuff to serious money.

Canton Network: The $6 Trillion Bet

The Canton Network isn’t a small sandbox. Over 600 institutions participate, including Goldman Sachs and BNP Paribas, and assets on the network run past $6 trillion. SBI has been active there already — it holds a Super Validator role, which means it’s part of the transaction approval process, not just a passive participant. That’s a meaningful position in a network where trust and transaction integrity matter enormously to institutional clients who can’t afford operational failures.

The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation and Digital Asset have plans to tokenize a subset of U.S. Treasury securities on Canton, targeting a controlled production launch in the first half of 2026. SBI’s validator role puts it right in the middle of that kind of infrastructure buildout.

Worth being clear: SBI isn’t walking away from Ripple. The company said explicitly that SBI Ripple Asia stays active, continuing to develop payment infrastructure and token issuance platforms for the Japanese regulatory environment. The Asia-Pacific partnership with Ripple remains intact. SBI is running two tracks, not swapping one for the other.

JX Token, Ondo Finance, and the Coinhako Deal

Canton is one piece of a much bigger picture. SBI already launched the JX token on Solana, giving institutional investors on-chain access to a Japanese equity strategy. That token came to market through a collaboration with DigiFT. Separately, SBI has plans to tokenize Japanese equities with Ondo Finance, using the yen-backed JPYSC stablecoin to handle settlement. Ondo Global Markets (BVI) Limited is set to issue those products, and SBI plans to distribute them through its own financial platforms.

And then there’s Coinhako. SBI grabbed a majority stake in the Singapore-based exchange on July 16, after getting the green light from the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Coinhako gives SBI a regulated distribution channel for digital assets across Asia — not a minor thing when you’re trying to push tokenized products into markets that care a lot about licensing and compliance. The acquisition fits the pattern: SBI isn’t just building blockchain infrastructure, it’s building the pipes to get those products in front of customers who can actually buy them.

The multichain angle is probably the most interesting part of all this. A few years ago, SBI’s blockchain identity was pretty much synonymous with Ripple and XRP. Now it’s running Canton validator operations, launching tokens on Solana, working with Ondo Finance, and distributing through a Singapore exchange. That’s a real strategic shift — not a pivot away from Ripple, but a clear expansion beyond it. Different networks serve different needs. Canton’s privacy and permissioned structure suits institutional securities work. Solana’s speed and liquidity suit retail-adjacent tokenized products like JX. SBI seems to be figuring out which tool fits which job, rather than forcing everything through one chain.

Institutional blockchain adoption has been slow globally, but the pressure to modernize settlement infrastructure is real. Cross-border securities transactions are expensive, slow, and full of counterparty risk. Networks like Canton are specifically designed to address that — permissioned, privacy-preserving, built for compliance-heavy environments. SBI’s bet is that the institutions already on Canton, 600 of them, will need someone to build the actual applications on top of the rails. SBI Digital Practice is supposed to be that builder.

What’s still murky: SBI hasn’t disclosed specific customers lined up for SBI Digital Practice, and there are no revenue targets out there yet. Shimotsu’s team is starting from a renamed subsidiary with a fresh mandate. Whether the Canton Network’s institutional roster translates into actual paying clients for SBI’s new unit — unclear for now.

The DTCC and Digital Asset’s U.S. Treasury tokenization plan on Canton is probably the clearest signal of where the network is heading. If that launch happens on schedule and SBI’s validator role keeps it embedded in those transactions, the renamed subsidiary lands in a genuinely significant spot in global financial infrastructure.

SBI acquired the Coinhako majority stake on July 16, per MAS approval.
