Understanding the ecosystem and developer growth on Solana is important to identify how well the blockchain is performing.
However, measuring this growth can be sometimes difficult. Solana is unique in relation to how users will be able to create and process transactions and tracking activity. They claim this tracking process is very different from many other blockchains out there.
They say instead of comparing apples to oranges, there’s a number of correct ways to measure users and developers on Solana.
Tracking activity on Solana in November shows, 2053 total active developers on all projects. – 1654 of those are working projects solely focused on Solana. Therefore, Don’t Compare Apples and Oranges.
Solana has to state that one of the best metrics to understand how a chain is growing is to understand the total number of developers who are building on the chain.
To track developers on Solana, it is important to have an understanding of the current libraries which developers use.
At the Solana Foundation, they have made use of Github API to track the projects using libraries in the Solana ecosystem.
Solana Developers: “How do you measure the amount of Solana developers? Using GitHub API, you can find projects that developers work on based on the specific libraries used. There’s a number of libraries you can search for usage in repositories that give you confidence they’re using Solana
With this data, you can put together a holistic view of developers and their activities. – How often they commit – If they contribute to other chains – If they continue building on Solana You can start to build up a data set that can tell you trends, retention, and more.
While this is a good proxy for measurement, it’s not perfect. We cannot count developers working on closed source repositories and actually undercount the total number of builders on Solana.
Solana Developers on Twitter are set to regularly update these numbers. They appreciate any feedback on the data collection method and on how they can improve their understanding of the developer ecosystem.”
Reportedly, Solana-related repositories can be multi-chain or even not be completely focused on Solana. This is a great example of an open-source multichain wallet. The focus of a multi-chain wallet repository is likely not just about Solana. Therefore, it might not be accurate to assume that a developer who is contributing to that repository is a Solana developer.
Further when counting Solana developers, they also count developers working on repositories that happen to support Solana separately from developers who are working on repositories which are are solely focused on Solana development.
Community Comments: The closest thing to human numbers are metrics from the wallets and not on chain.
Total number of active devs is about 75 I believe. Can you please confirm this?
