The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has filed charges against Chinese crypto entrepreneur Justin Sun and eight high-profile individuals, including actress Lindsay Lohan and rapper Soulja Boy, for their involvement in fraudulent activities related to cryptocurrency sales.
Justin Sun, the founder of Tron Foundation, BitTorrent Foundation, and Rainberry, is accused of manipulating the distribution of Tronix (TRX) and BitTorrent (BTT) tokens and inflating their trading volumes since August 2017. He also allegedly hid payments made to celebrities for promoting these tokens on social media, creating a false perception of unbiased interest.
According to the SEC, Sun’s actions resulted in tens of millions of dollars in illegal profits at the expense of other investors.
Gary Gensler, the SEC Chair, emphasized the risks associated with crypto assets lacking proper disclosure. While Sun has yet to comment on the matter, several celebrities involved, including Akon, Ne-Yo, Jake Paul, Lil Yachty, and Kendra Lust, have agreed to settle without admitting guilt, collectively paying over $400,000.
Lindsay Lohan’s lawyer, Andrew Brettler, stated that the actress cooperated with the SEC investigation and agreed to return the funds received and pay a fine to resolve the issue, asserting that she was unaware of the disclosure requirements until March. Attorneys for the other celebrities have not yet responded to requests for comment.
