In a recent Twitter exchange that sent shockwaves through the blockchain community, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has thrust Layer 2 (L2) scaling solutions into the spotlight, particularly challenging the classification of Ethereum’s “validiums.” The ensuing debate among experts and enthusiasts delves into the intricacies of categorizing L2 solutions and their security models.

Validiums vs. Rollups in Ethereum’s Scaling Landscape: The conversation ignited when Daniel Wang, founder of the Ethereum roll-up solution Taiko, argued on Twitter that if an Ethereum rollup relies on an external data chain, such as Celestia, for data availability, it should be deemed a “validium.” Unlike traditional ZK-rollups, validiums do not post transaction data to Ethereum’s Layer 1 (L1) but instead rely on cryptographic proofs off-chain, aiming to boost scalability by reducing the need for full transaction data storage on the mainnet.

Vitalik Buterin aligned with Wang’s viewpoint, emphasizing that the core characteristic of a rollup is providing an unconditional security guarantee, allowing users to withdraw assets even if all other participants conspire against them. However, this guarantee is compromised if data availability relies on an external system, leading Buterin to advocate for the categorization of such solutions as validiums.

Proposed Terminological Adjustments: Taking the debate to the decentralized social media platform Warpcast, Vitalik Buterin shared a diagram proposing terminological adjustments in the blockchain industry. He suggested replacing terms like “security-favoring” and “scale-favoring” with “strong” and “light,” respectively, aiming to streamline the terminology. This proposal elicited mixed reactions within the Ethereum community, challenging conventional definitions.

Ryan Berckmans, for instance, asserted that validiums should be considered Layer 2 networks, irrespective of data availability location. He welcomed debates challenging the notion that data availability must be on Ethereum for a solution to be categorized as L2.

The debate was sparked when Daniel Wang, founder of the Ethereum roll-up solution Taiko, took to Twitter to argue that if an Ethereum Rollup relies on an external data chain, such as Celestia, for data availability, it should be labeled as a “Validium.” Unlike traditional ZK-Rollups, Validiums do not post transaction data to Ethereum’s Layer 1 (L1), relying instead on cryptographic proofs to validate transactions off-chain. This innovative approach aims to enhance scalability by minimizing the need to store complete transaction data on the mainnet.

Backing Wang’s perspective, Vitalik Buterin emphasized that the fundamental characteristic of a Rollup is providing an unconditional security guarantee, ensuring users can withdraw their assets even if all other participants conspire against them. However, according to Buterin, this security guarantee is compromised if data availability relies on an external system, leading him to advocate for the classification of such solutions as Validiums.

Divergent Views on the Classification of Validiums: The blockchain community remains divided on the classification of validiums. L2Beat, specializing in industry analytics for Layer 2 solutions, takes a stance contrary to Berckmans’. L2Beat argues that validiums, including Optimiums, do not qualify as L2s due to the additional trust assumptions introduced by not publishing data on Ethereum’s Layer 1.

This lack of consensus emphasizes the evolving nature of the Layer 2 scaling solutions ecosystem in Ethereum. As the blockchain industry continues to innovate, terminology and classifications are revisited to accurately reflect emerging solutions’ features and security models.
