The XRP Ledger just crossed 13 million AI-driven transactions. And it’s still climbing.
Why It Matters
The significant rise in AI-driven transactions on the XRP Ledger highlights the growing integration of artificial intelligence in payment systems, potentially setting a precedent for the future of digital finance. As the number of x402 merchants increases, this development not only enhances the utility of the XRP ecosystem but also underscores the broader trend of leveraging AI to streamline and optimize financial transactions, which could attract further interest and investment in blockchain technologies.
J. Ayo Akinyele, the engineering head at RippleX, confirmed on October 10 that the network had processed more than 13 million transactions among 166 registered x402 merchants. Agent-driven payments made up roughly 25% of all ledger activity at that point — a number that’s hard to ignore. The XRPL AI Hub later put the figure at 13,489,468 agentic transactions, spread across 168 merchants, with cumulative settlements of approximately 6,982 XRP and 12,010 RLUSD. Since then, the tracker has pushed past 13.6 million. The network first crossed the one million mark back in July. So the jump has been fast. Pretty fast, actually.
What x402 Actually Does
The x402 protocol is basically the engine behind all of this. It lets automated software agents pay for digital services — APIs, data subscriptions, AI model inference — directly through blockchain transactions, with no manual approval needed for each payment. Ripple’s own documentation frames it as ideal for small, frequent, automated payments. The ledger completes these transactions in three to five seconds, which makes it workable for the kind of low-cost, high-volume activity AI agents generate.
Both XRP and RLUSD are supported. RLUSD is Ripple’s stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar, which gives businesses a stable-value option without worrying about market swings. To hold or receive RLUSD, accounts need to establish a trust line with the issuer — that’s a hard requirement per Ripple’s documentation, and it’s there to keep transactions secure and the stablecoin’s value predictable.
Chandler Fang, a former Ripple product lead, said demand is rising fast for payments tied to APIs, data, and computing services. He sees more businesses connecting their products to the XRP Ledger so AI agents can transact using XRP or RLUSD. More real-world merchants adopting blockchain infrastructure — that’s the direction he’s pointing toward. The x402 facilitator run by t54 is the piece that links service requests with the actual payment infrastructure underneath.
Not a small job.
Developer Tools and the Road to 100 Million
Ripple dropped the XRPL AI Starter Kit in June. The toolkit gives developers what they need to build applications that automate sending and receiving payments — things like creating wallets, initiating transfers, retrieving transaction data, and checking balances under predefined conditions. It’s designed to make it easier for AI agents to handle routine financial tasks without human intervention at each step.
Akinyele had previously predicted the network would surpass 10 million transactions. It did. He’s also speculated that 100 million could come sooner than most people expect — but that’s a forecast, not a confirmed target. No deadline has been set. The financial impact of hitting that number, and what it means for commercial revenue, is still murky. Most of the transactions recorded so far involve small amounts of XRP or RLUSD, which tracks with the low-cost, automated nature of what x402 is built for.
At XRP Seoul 2026, Akinyele talked through the work underway to support AI agents in conducting transactions securely. That includes spending controls, verifiable identities, and secure wallet management — the kind of infrastructure that needs to be solid before any serious commercial scale kicks in. RippleX and related teams are working on expanding x402 use, though no specific commercial partnerships have been announced off the back of the recent milestone.
t54’s public implementation of x402 covers tools for identifying validated payments and participating merchants, software for recording transaction data, and systems that help developers register payment services and plug automated settlement into their applications. The XRPL AI Hub’s payment index, which t54 operates, is what’s tracking all of this in real time. It’s the scoreboard, basically.
Where the Numbers Stand
To recap the raw data: 13,489,468 agentic transactions confirmed by the XRPL AI Hub, 168 registered merchants, cumulative settlements of roughly 6,982 XRP and 12,010 RLUSD, and agent-driven payments sitting at about 25% of total ledger activity. The tracker has since moved past 13.6 million. Growth from one million in July to over 13 million by October 10 is a significant jump by any measure — though the dollar value of those settlements is still relatively small, which is worth keeping in mind.
Fang didn’t give a specific timeline for broader merchant adoption. Akinyele didn’t either. What’s clear is that the infrastructure is in place, the developer tools are live, and the transaction count keeps moving.
The XRPL AI Hub’s index sits at 13.6 million and counting.
