As the crypto world prepares for the possibility of new spot ETFs, a growing debate is emerging over which altcoin—XRP or Solana—would attract more investor capital if both were approved on the same day. In a recent conversation hosted by crypto investor Kyle Chassé, Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan and Bloomberg ETF expert James Seyffart shared their perspectives on what might play out.
While both analysts acknowledged the strengths of each project, they agreed that XRP would likely take the early lead. This prediction is based largely on the intensity of its retail support base and historical performance in similar product categories.
Why XRP Could Dominate Early ETF Inflows Seyffart pointed to the performance of derivatives-based ETFs involving Solana and XRP. While Solana-themed products were introduced earlier, XRP versions eventually gathered more assets and capital inflow. Although derivative ETFs differ from spot ETFs in terms of investor demand, Seyffart believes the trend reveals something important: XRP’s strong retail base often shows up when it matters.
“There was a pseudo spot product from Rex Osprey that tried to replicate Solana exposure through a complicated process,” Seyffart said. “It did well, but XRP’s product still pulled in more.”
He added that retail awareness around XRP is far greater than many realize, noting its popularity among casual crypto followers. “People who know little about the space often like XRP. They believe it’s going to be used by banks everywhere,” he explained. He also cited TikTok, Reddit, and other platforms where XRP-related discussion consistently dominates.
Hougan echoed this view. He argued that on day one of a spot ETF’s trading, it’s not broad public opinion that matters most—it’s passion. And XRP holders, he said, are unmatched in their enthusiasm.
“The passion drives the flows,” Hougan said. “The average opinion of Solana is probably more favorable across crypto investors, but those aren’t the ones making ETF moves on day one. It’s the diehards.”
He shared an example from a recent XRP event in Las Vegas. “I attended an XRP conference on a Saturday, and it was packed—1,200 people filled the room. That level of commitment is rare. It shows how energized the XRP community is.”
Solana’s Long-Term Strength Lies in Institutions Despite XRP’s potential early lead, both analysts believe Solana could surpass it over time—particularly as more institutional players explore its ecosystem.
Seyffart pointed out that while retail discussion favors XRP, institutional conversations often lean toward Solana and Ethereum. “From what I’m seeing, a lot of the more serious institutions are evaluating Solana,” he said.
Hougan also touched on Solana’s future potential, suggesting that its appeal may grow as its ecosystem matures and its use cases become more defined. He noted that a shift in Solana’s overall story could change its standing in the ETF space.
“If Solana is performing well when the ETF arrives, it could draw significant attention,” Hougan said. “The narrative has to evolve, but it definitely has the potential.”
Retail vs Institutional Dynamics The contrast between retail enthusiasm and institutional focus is key to understanding this debate. XRP has long cultivated a fiercely loyal community, one that’s shown up in both market sentiment and trading volume during critical moments.
Solana, on the other hand, has carved a place for itself among institutional discussions. From high-speed transactions to lower gas fees and innovative DeFi applications, the network continues to attract serious attention from venture capitalists, hedge funds, and blockchain developers alike.
This divergence may explain why the short-term vs long-term predictions differ. XRP’s community may drive heavy inflows initially, but Solana’s infrastructure and adaptability could secure a more sustainable trajectory in the ETF market.
A Tale of Two Growth Stories Ultimately, the analysts suggest that each asset could win in different ways. XRP might dominate the opening months of ETF trading due to its grassroots energy and name recognition. Solana, however, may quietly gain momentum and surpass XRP over time as its institutional credibility continues to grow.
“It’s not about which asset is more popular overall,” Hougan said. “It’s about who shows up on day one—and that’s where XRP has the edge.”
Seyffart agreed, closing with this takeaway: “XRP could win the early battle. But Solana may win the war.”
As regulators inch closer to approving more spot ETFs beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum, this kind of strategic forecasting will become increasingly important. Investors will be watching closely to see which coin takes the crown—not just in the ETF race, but in broader crypto adoption.
