Institutional adoption of DeFi is in parts hindered by infrastructure and in parts by the lack of clarity around compliance. I think we’re in the verge of overcoming both very shortly.
DeFi is attracting the lion share of developers because of the diversity at the protocol layer and the redundancy at the infrastructure layer. These two factors lead to a more diversified and more robust application layer. I made a comparison here with the Lightning Network.
DeFi democratizes two things: access to financial services and innovation in financial services.
Access: even the American middle class does not have access to the full suite of financial services that have existed for centuries, let alone the developing world. I talked about the significance of collateralized borrowing through the lens of my experience growing up in Iran.
Innovation: information, communication and many other sectors have long enjoyed the internet’s democratization of innovation. Financial services are bottlenecked and cannot innovate.
