In theETC Core Dev Call 13 about Mining Algos and Last Call Proposals it was decided to move forward with ECIP-1099.
Ethereum Cooperative tweeted: “Participants agreed to move forward with ECIP-1099 “DAG Limit Restriction” which brings back 3-4gb GPUs as well as Keccak256 mining algo change.”
There is an elaborate You Tube video in this regard. Reportedly, the meeting took place on Friday, September 11, 2020.
Contributors, developers, and stakeholders got together to discuss details around restricting the DAG file, the Keccak256 and SHA3-256 proposed algorithm changes.
Resolutions were made in the meeting. ECIP-1043 was replaced with ECIP-1099 and further moved to Last Call for a period of 3 weeks. This they state will activate on Mordor testnet at block 2,340,000. Further it will enable 3GB and 4GB GPUs to continue mining on ETC. – SHA3-256 (ECIP-1095) rejected, and Keccak256 (ECIP-1049) kept in last call for a period of 4 weeks.
The resolution also stated that reverting back to the Keccak algorithm will also provide all the benefits of SHA3-256 but also preserve interoperability with the Ethereum network.
Sydney Ifergan, the crypto expert tweeted: “Solving the 51% attack vulnerability on the Ethereum Classic (ETC) is the most important. I feel they are taking a call as it is crucial to deal with it in a limited period of time.”
ETC Core Dev Call Resolutions summarized: “ECIP-1043 “Fixed DAG Size” replaced by ECIP-1099; in last call (3 weeks) ECIP-1049 “Keccack256” moved to last call (4 weeks) ECIP-1095 “SHA3-256” rejected.”
Someone opined, “Just rolling back the DAG, the only thing that could happen is an increase in network hash, well in theory. Pools wouldn’t need to change, mining software would need to change. With this new implementation a lot changes.”
Sergio Demian Lerner tweeted: “51% Attack protection system for Ethereum Classic based on Bitcoin Merged Mining” Presentation by Sergio Lerner and Martin Medina When: Monday – Sep. 14, 2020 – 2PM UTC, 7AM PST, 10AM EST Where: Crowdcast (Link to be provided)”
When someone in response to Sergio Demian Lerner expressed that Komodo Platform can solve this, Sergio Demian Lerner expressed that Komodo uses notarization, which is quite different than merge-mining. Notarization requires a notaries and signatures. Merge-mining does not. You can present the Komodo system to the ETC community for consideration.
When asked about how to protect ETC, he further replied, because for RSK it’s a test bed for its Universal Merge Mining System, which benefits Bitcoin miners with additional rewards paid in BTC over RSK.
