Jelle Millenaar on IOTA and the EU Releasing their Proposal for a European Digital Identity Framework

IOTA

Jelle Millenaar, Lead of Identity at IOTA Foundation expressed:  The EU released their proposal for a European Digital Identity framework. This is huge for SSI and will provide many opportunities for IOTA. Let’s review some of the highlights I encountered while reading the legislation in this thread

Let me first compliment the EU Commission as they actually understood SSI and their proposal is pretty much aligned with IOTA’s vision and roadmap. I find this pretty impressive considering how many countries and most of the private sector are behind on this topic.

The EU seems very interesting in collaborating with the European private sector to innovate, test, and research the identity framework. The IOTA Foundation, its partners, and its community are perfectly positioned to partake in the planned sandbox tests.

The focus of the framework goes beyond just proving an identity, but already mentions personal data management, making it more trustworthy, safeguarded, and improve citizen.

Initially I was afraid that the EU would want to safeguard this data themselves, but they allow private parties to become service providers. This opens the door to further decentralization by managing your data completely by yourself. Inside a wallet and with a backup.

The legislation mentions electronic ledgers to provide immutable data. It’s safe to assume DLT like IOTA will be considered here. Even better, it may seem that the EU opts for interoperability between multiple DLTs.

Regardless if this will be following the W3C DID standard or not, making IOTA Identity compatible with this standard makes a lot of sense. Making IOTA Identity compatible with eIDAS was already planned and this legislation will make things only easier and more worthwhile.

The framework seems to aim to provide a permissionless environment that initially focuses on the EU but may grow to a worldwide solution. The work will really start in Q3/Q4 2022, by which IOTA Identity can deliver all requirements of the legislation.

The only thing missing is the consideration for Identity for Things, but let’s be honest, that doesn’t require the same level of legislation to make it happen. With the European Identity framework coming, IOTA can show how IoT fits perfectly in this.

In sum, the EU Digital Identity legislation is well aligned with the SSI fundamentals and vision of IOTA. It brings massive opportunities and IOTA is well-positioned to take part in its R&D. EU Commission and member states.
