In the Kernel fireside series #3, Take Back the Web with David Vorick, Cofounder SiaCoin, they concluded stating “taking back the web” has to do with three fundamental pillars: augmenting our ability to think for ourselves, reclaiming our time, and extending our ability to co-operate.
Some interesting ideas in the Kernel was about Freedom, which is the ability to be conscious of the constraints within which one operates. The struggle in the current day is not collective rather it is individual and freedom it is not in the future it is here and now or not at all.
David Vorick spoke about what he thought was important to make the decentralized web succeeding, which was about taking over and replacing decentralized web which is fragmentation. He pointed to how all data is on centralized servers, when you post something to Twitter, that information goes to Twitter servers and it stays on Twitter. And, if someone say a different Feed Manager, wants to use that data, they want to ask permission from Twitter.
And, one of the areas where the everyday person feels this the strongest is with messaging. The kind of messages on Facebook are different from Twitter and they are different from all your messenger apps. And, the messaging ecosystem is all fragmented, but I think it goes a lot deeper than this.
A big part of modern corporate culture and modern start up culture is this idea of data mode. You want to create, say for instance Facebook made itself a network that is built by people. Facebook does not go and make posts, because people make posts when people find their friends and look up for friends.
Facebook has been able to take all that work we did in to making interesting content, making interesting groups, finding out friends and connecting with them, Facebook locks that away behind Facebook’s platform, because if someone else has access to it, people do not have a reason to be out of Facebook anymore. Facebook loses, the ability to drive ads and control our minds, which Facebook makes money by controlling our minds.
He pointed to how if we can unlock this fragmentation, we can move data, instead of being under the control of Facebook. If it is in control of the people who made that data, we can get in to a more powerful situation where suddenly Facebook has to suddenly compete with the smallest developer out there. However, he said that since Facebook has billing users, it can be hard for smallest developers to compete.
In a user controlled data world, he stated that everyone can have billing users, and on how the smartest people have the best chances to succeed. And, on how you are never looking to overcome this data mode that are so, endemic to the internet today. He stated, that is what is going to make the decentralized internet like the Skynet Internet completely unstoppable.
