Twitter, is experimenting with NFTs to make it possible for users to display their NFT collections as their profile pictures. The new functionality envisioned and worked on by Twitter will allow users to import their NFT collections from their wallets on the blockchain and to display it in their profiles with a verified checkmark that will be based on the blockchain in which the NFT has been originally minted.

Mada Aflak, a senior software engineer at Twitter, the microblogging platform is working on this functionality.  After the explosive growth of NFTs and many of them selling for millions of dollars, it has been common for NFT owners to display the NFT in their profile picture.

While the details of the original owner, will be there on the blockchain in which NFT has been minted, anyone can copy the NFT picture from anyone and paste it as their profile picture. Thus, those who were displaying NFTs which were extremely expensive were not pleased about this move.  While some of them feel it is okay for others to copy and paste an NFT for the kind of attention it gets, others are looking to use the NFT exclusively for themselves.

Without due verification process, on social media, it will be possible for anyone to reuse anyone’s NFT.  To verify ownership of their NFTs, users could link their wallets; however, that will potentially compromise their anonymity.  Showing off ownership of NFTs is a part of the new reputation system on the web.

Owning expensive and rare NFTs is now considered a mode of showing off the amount of knowledge one has about how the cryptocurrency space functions.  NFTs are soon going to be out on Twitter.  The significance of Twitter’s new feature is not about its capability to prove ownership of the NFT, but about making it clear about who are the previous owners and how much was it bought for. It is going to work as a new reputation system for the digital world.

NFTs are changing how people value ownership.  It is becoming possible for anything to become an NFT, even a TikTok video is getting sold as an NFT.  The new Twitter functionality will make it more acceptable for anything to be an NFT.  TikTok and Twitter are now actively encouraging non-fungible tokens (NFT). The public with the details of the authentic ownership of NFT will make it easy for the general public and people to realize how valuable and even necessary NFTs are.
