MetaMask added Stellar as a default network to its Mobile and Extension wallets on Oct. 29, integrating the payments network into existing multichain accounts. The update allows users to access Stellar addresses derived from their recovery phrases, placing them alongside assets on other networks within the same wallet interface.

Account Funding and Reserve Rules

Before an unfunded Stellar account can receive assets such as USDC through MetaMask’s documented flow, it requires initial funding and token activation. MetaMask instructions specify that a new, unfunded address needs a first deposit of at least 1 XLM. This initial deposit covers the base account reserve required under Stellar’s current network rules.

Under these rules, an ordinary unsponsored account must maintain a base reserve of 1 XLM. Additionally, the account must hold 0.5 XLM for each ordinary trustline created. Other account entries can increase this minimum reserve requirement. The locked balance remains in the account but is not available for spending. Transaction fees require spendable XLM above the reserve amount, meaning users need additional XLM to complete activation transactions because the reserve increase and network fee cannot be drawn from the locked amount.

Stellar’s network rules allow another account to sponsor these reserves, including the base account reserve, which can reduce the XLM requirement for the primary account if sponsorship is arranged.

Manual Activation and Bridge Risks

To prepare for receiving specific tokens like USDC, users must navigate to Manage Tokens in the MetaMask interface. They must enable the desired token, open the entry marked Inactive, choose Activate, and confirm the transaction. Merely adding the token to the visible list does not complete the activation process. This step creates the necessary trustline between the user’s account and the token issuer.

For swaps between tokens already on the Stellar network, MetaMask can automatically create the required trustline. However, for cross-chain swaps into a non-XLM token, MetaMask requires the receiving trustline to be activated manually before the transaction proceeds. The wallet prompts users before bridge confirmation to ensure the setup is complete.

MetaMask warns that bridged funds can be lost if the trustline is missing when they arrive. This risk distinguishes cross-chain bridging from ordinary Stellar token sends. In a standard Stellar token transfer to a recipient without the required trustline, MetaMask states that the send fails rather than resulting in lost funds. The manual setup requirement ensures that users verify their account configuration before executing cross-chain movements.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much XLM is required to activate a new Stellar account in MetaMask?

A new, unfunded address requires a first deposit of at least 1 XLM to cover the base account reserve. An additional 0.5 XLM is reserved for each ordinary trustline, and users need spendable XLM above the reserve to cover transaction fees.

What happens if a user attempts a cross-chain swap without activating the trustline?

MetaMask prompts users before bridge confirmation and warns that bridged funds can be lost if the trustline is missing when they arrive. For ordinary Stellar token sends without a trustline, the transaction fails instead of losing funds.
