In France, cryptocurrency holders are not the impulsive speculators people might imagine. According to a study presented by BPCE Group on Wednesday, October 21, at a press briefing on savings and crypto assets, 47% of them also own stocks and bonds. Among French people overall, that figure falls to 17%. A 30-point gap. That’s huge.

Why It Matters

Why it matters: The data challenges the stereotype that crypto ownership is confined to speculative, single-asset behavior and suggests French crypto holders may be more financially diversified than the general population. For the market, that can matter because it points to a broader pool of investors who may view digital assets as part of a wider savings strategy rather than a standalone bet, which can shape how products, regulation, and risk messaging are developed.

And that’s not all. These same holders are 32% likely to have a life insurance policy, compared with 15% of the French population. For so-called unusual investments—gold, forests and the like—the figure is 25% among crypto holders, versus 3% among French people overall. Employee savings plans and the Retirement Savings Plan (PER)? They are part of the portfolios of 41% of crypto holders, compared with 22% of French people. Marion Stephan, head of socio-economic studies at BPCE Group, described their financial assets as clearly distinct from those of French people overall. Hardly surprising when you look at the figures.

For these investors, crypto is one asset among many. Far from the only one.

11% of French People Own Crypto, but Holdings Range From Tiny to Huge

According to the latest study by the Association for the Development of Digital Assets, published with France’s Ministry of Economy and Finance, 11% of French people own cryptocurrencies in 2026. But behind that overall figure, the picture is highly fragmented. At one end of the spectrum, 14.3% of French crypto holders have less than 100 euros invested in crypto assets. At the other end, 4% have more than 500,000 euros in this asset class. The study does not break down the figures between those thresholds. So it is unclear what happens between the two extremes.

The average crypto holding in France stands at 9,000 euros, according to European Central Bank data for 2025. The eurozone average is 9,200 euros. France is slightly below that, and its ownership rate is lower too: 7.3%, compared with 10.6% for the eurozone in 2025. French people hold less, and less often.

Distrust, Volatility and a Clear Preference for Banks

Why do people buy crypto? Diversifying their savings tops the list, cited by 41% of current holders. Next comes the search for higher returns, at 31%, followed by the desire for a quick return on investment, mentioned by 27%. These motivations are fairly rational, all things considered.

But prospective buyers have a different profile. Among their motivations, 27% cite wanting to avoid taxes and 21% wanting to protect their privacy. Those are motivations likely to raise regulators’ eyebrows.

When it comes to barriers, distrust prevails. A lack of confidence in the sector holds back 65% of French people. Lack of knowledge is a barrier for 40%. Market volatility ranks third, cited by 22% of respondents. And 21% still associate cryptocurrencies with scams or fraud. The image is improving year after year, but remains mostly negative.

Against that backdrop, it is hardly surprising that 36% of French people would rather buy crypto through a platform set up by a bank. Only 23% would choose an independent crypto exchange platform. Banks inspire confidence. A lot of it.

Bitcoin at $83,000, Far Below Its Record

The crypto market as a whole exceeds $2,700 billion in market capitalization in October 2026. Bitcoin accounts for 60% of it. At 11 a.m. on October 21, its price is trading above $83,000. But it is worth remembering that Bitcoin hit an all-time high of $126,000 in October 2026 and has since fallen 33%. A sharp drop.

Regulatory concerns are cited by 33% of respondents in the BPCE study. One-third of people. Bitcoin at $83,000, and a third of French people still looking toward regulators with suspicion.
