What Happened
BitMine Immersion Technologies has just purchased an additional 12,532 ETH. The company now holds 4.9% of the total Ethereum supply — estimated at 122.1 million tokens — and spent about $31.9 million on this acquisition. Not insignificant. However, the combined value of its crypto assets, cash, and strategic holdings still plummeted by $1.2 billion in seven days, dropping from $17.4 billion to $16.2 billion. The reason? Ethereum fell by 6.7% over the week, and some strategic holdings also lost value as a result.
Why It Matters
The significant loss in BitMine's asset value amidst a substantial acquisition of Ethereum highlights the volatility inherent in the cryptocurrency market, particularly for large holders. This situation underscores the challenges that institutional investors face when navigating price fluctuations, as their substantial positions can lead to considerable financial exposure. Moreover, BitMine's increased stake in Ethereum may indicate a long-term bullish outlook despite the recent downturn, reflecting broader market dynamics and investor sentiment.
It’s painful, even for a company that deliberately accumulates.
Historical Context
The story is familiar. MicroStrategy did exactly this with Bitcoin — buying massively, holding at all costs, and enduring valuation rollercoasters along the way. The gamble has sometimes shone, sometimes burned. BitMine seems to want to play the same tune, but with Ethereum. The company launched its program called “Alchemy of 5%” on June 30, 2025, and since then, it has been buying every week, at varying volumes, but never really stopping. The goal is clear: to reach or exceed 6,105,000 ETH held, which would validate the program’s full completion. BitMine is at 6,028,946 ETH. Almost there.
And staking plays a central role in all this. Not just accumulation.
Why It Matters
Here’s what sets BitMine’s strategy apart from a simple directional bet on price: 84% of its ETH is already staked. That represents about 5,067,309 ETH at work. The current yield is around 2.61% annualized, translating to potential annual revenues of $336 million. If BitMine stakes all its holdings, projections rise to $400 million per year. In essence, the company is not solely betting on price increases — it’s building a passive income stream that at least partially cushions market shocks.
But “partially” remains the key word here. A 6.7% drop in one week on a portfolio of this size is still brutal, even with staking behind it.
Diversification, however, poses its own problems. BitMine holds stakes in Eightco Holdings and Beast Industries. The stake in Eightco Holdings dropped from $117 million to $85 million — a devaluation that directly impacted the company’s overall valuation. No clear details on Beast Industries in the available figures, but the general trend in strategic holdings is downward. This adds a layer of complexity that markets probably don’t appreciate right now.
The regular accumulation since June 2025 shows real operational discipline. Week after week, even when the price drops, even when the total valuation declines. It’s exactly what MicroStrategy did with Bitcoin during correction phases — staying the course and continuing to buy. The question, of course, is whether the next Ethereum bull cycle arrives soon enough and strong enough to justify the level of risk taken.
Not clear yet.
What to Watch
Three things to keep in mind. First, the threshold of 6,105,000 ETH: BitMine is at 6,028,946, so about 76,000 ETH from the finish line. With a weekly purchase pace, it could happen quickly — or not, if prices rise too much and purchases become more expensive.
Next, the price of Ethereum itself. The $2,500 mark is often cited as an important technical level. If Ethereum falls below this threshold and stays there, the valuation of BitMine’s holdings takes an additional hit, and the staking yield in absolute value also mechanically decreases.
And precisely, this staking yield at 2.61% — it is not set in stone. The yield of Ethereum staking varies according to the number of active validators on the network. If more and more ETH are staked globally, the yield per validator decreases. So the projected $336 million in annual revenues is a figure that can move in either direction.
BitMine’s cash and marketable securities also declined over the week, reducing the leeway for future purchases. Can the company maintain its accumulation pace if market conditions continue to deteriorate? Probably, but at what cost to available liquidity? No answer in the published figures.
BitMine holds 6,028,946 ETH, including 5,067,309 in staking, with a target yield of 2.61% annualized.
