BEP-524 focuses on reducing block times. This is a direct continuation of the Lorentz upgrade in April 2025, which halved block times from 3 seconds to 1.5 seconds. Now, Maxwell takes it a step further—bringing it down to an average of 0.8 seconds per block.

BEP-563 enhances peer-to-peer messaging between validators. Faster communication between nodes ensures timely block proposals, reduces the likelihood of missed votes, and minimizes syncing delays. This is critical for achieving sub-second block times and ensuring consensus stability in a decentralized validator network.

BEP-564 introduces new message types to the protocol. These include:

  • GetBlocksByRangeMsg: Requests multiple blocks in a single network call.

  • RangeBlocksMsg: Sends all requested blocks in one bundled response.

Together, these upgrades drastically improve network synchronization speeds and reduce latency for new validators or nodes joining the network.

With shorter block intervals, developers must retest and refactor DApps that rely on time-based logic. The BNB Chain team advised all DApp teams to verify compatibility with the new 0.8-second block interval.

“If something breaks, it’s probably your code — not the chain,” the team remarked ahead of the fork, signaling confidence in the upgrade’s stability and performance.

Shorter block times translate into faster transaction finality, allowing decentralized applications to offer a smoother user experience. This is particularly crucial in DeFi, where latency can impact trading, lending, and liquidity pool interactions.

Ahead of the Maxwell upgrade, BNB’s native token price surged by 6.5%, rising from a weekly low of $617 to a peak of $655. At the time of writing, BNB trades at approximately $655.70, marking a 1.2% gain in the last 24 hours.

Although still about 17% below its all-time high of $788 set in December 2021, this recent momentum highlights growing investor confidence in the blockchain’s technical roadmap and performance improvements.
