Curve Finance launched its StableSwap system on Stellar mainnet on October 29, marking the first native deployment of the protocol outside the Ethereum Virtual Machine ecosystem.

The Stellar Development Foundation described the release as a significant step for the network, which focuses on payments and tokenized financial assets. The initial implementation provides users with permissionless pool creation, pool discovery, swaps, and liquidity provision for supported assets.

Native implementation details

StableSwap is an automated market maker design intended for assets that trade near one another in value. The system is particularly suited for dollar-pegged stablecoins and closely related tokenized instruments. Curve’s model aims to reduce slippage for exchanges of similar-value assets compared with general-purpose liquidity pools.

Stellar stated that this implementation was built specifically for its own smart-contract environment. The code was not placed behind an Ethereum-compatible execution layer, distinguishing it from previous deployments on other networks. By moving the protocol natively to Stellar, the infrastructure is designed to integrate directly with the network’s existing payment and asset management capabilities.

Liquidity mechanics and risks

In the StableSwap model, liquidity providers deposit eligible assets into a pool. An automated market-maker contract then calculates the terms on which traders can exchange between these assets. As trades occur, the pool balances change, adjusting the price of the assets within the pool.

Users interacting with these pools face specific risks, including smart-contract vulnerabilities, depeg events, and liquidity risks. For networks carrying stablecoins and tokenized funds, a low-slippage exchange mechanism can serve as a conversion layer for other payments or lending services. However, the launch announcement confirms the existence of the infrastructure but does not guarantee substantial liquidity or sustained trading volume.

The Stellar Development Foundation also discussed FXSwap, a separate system designed for assets with changing relative prices. The foundation noted that the Stellar rollout of FXSwap is planned only after an audit is completed. Consequently, FXSwap is not currently live on the network.
