The Hedera Africa Hackathon 2025 has officially started, bringing together more than 50 global and regional partners and offering over $1 million in prizes. This event is organized by The Hashgraph Association, a Swiss non-profit promoting Hedera technology, and the Exponential Science Foundation, which supports responsible tech growth. Africa is leading the way in mobile money, with countries like Ghana, Uganda, Zambia, and Tanzania already using blockchain to improve digital payments. In fact, almost 75% of the world’s mobile money users are in Sub-Saharan Africa.
One major focus of the hackathon is building blockchain-based financial tools and tokenizing real-world assets (RWAs). Other categories include projects on sustainability, self-owned digital IDs, gaming with AI, the metaverse, and NFTs—each one designed with Africa’s needs in mind.
Participants will also get to work with powerful tech like AI, IoT, robotics, and quantum computing. These tools will help teams solve complex challenges and build apps that can grow and make a real difference.
Global Access, Local Focus
Even though the hackathon is focused on Africa, it’s open to participants worldwide. Developers can join online, and there will also be physical locations—called hacking stations—in major African cities like Lagos, Nairobi, Cairo, Kinshasa, Cape Town, Casablanca, and Tunis.
Everyone taking part will receive training, Hedera certifications, and expert support. Over 100 universities, tech hubs, and incubators, including Tunisia’s DAR Blockchain, are also involved to help foster innovation at the grassroots level.

Kamal Youssefi, President of The Hashgraph Association, said that Africa is full of young, talented, and motivated tech minds. He believes that by giving them the right tools and skills, this hackathon will help shape a better digital future for everyone.
