Emin Gun Sirer pointed to how Avalanche is fast, not because it uses massive hardware, not because it centralizes processing, but because it uses a superior algorithm for achieving consensus.

Twitter Handle Omar expressed, “Sub-Second Finality is the special thing about AVAX.”

Something seems not exact here, since light itself takes about 0.1337 seconds to travel around the earth. I think it is physically impossible to achieve non-fork-able finality near the speed of light around earth. Care to comment?

I don’t think random sampling neighbors is based by geography Ha Ha.  Or I would be shocked, if that’s what it means!

Clarification:  Those are not confirmation times, those are average times between blocks. Avalanche is quiescent, if there are no transactions, there are no blocks. Each block is confirmed as soon as it is produced, usually under 1s.

Calling it sub-second makes it sound like it’s ALMOST a second. Thank you for the clarification!

If you are in the field of control theory, you’ll encounter dozens different step answers. f.e. from hours (heat engines), mech. seconds (robots), subseconds for (communication),etc. Subseconds in a decentralized network is a huge advancement.  The current internet has such speeds.

Actually not. In the industry you use the term submicron for the nodes in Nanometerscale. So photolitography techniques, due the limits of mechanical instruments. Another example: Sub-Millimeter infers to the limit of visible mechanical handcrafting. Around 500um/ 0,5mm.

Just in case you miss the fact that “around the globe” means reaching the same point turning around globe and nodes don’t run like sending tx to a nearby node by traveling around the globe.

It’s sad that people don’t understand what a big deal this is – even Avax people. This has been a major pain point since BTC came out. Try running a business with BTC/BCH and do a lot of payments, you will understand. Everyone talks about DeFi but payments are more important.

Every human being on the planet engages in economic activity = payments, multiple times per day. It’s 10x more important for me to have free market money than DeFi. 1sec finality + subnets were the last missing pieces of the puzzle, big things will come next.

Also all the payment processors like Bitpay and exchanges have a completely broken UX because it’s based on POW blocks and confirmations. The fact you can just press the button and it’s settled changes everything. Next gen UX in crypto will be built on Avax and go mainstream.
