A Mareva Injunction was signed by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice Judge Calum MacLeod and the order was to freeze crypto assets in more than 120 different addresses tied to BTC, ADA, ETH, LTC and XMR.

For clarity, a Mareva injunction is a court order, which is used in the U.K. and Canada in a way to freeze a defendant’s assets to prevent them from being spent, hidden or moved before a judgment is ordered.

The suit also directs several financial institutions, platforms and exchanges to freeze any transactions related to identified addresses’ wallets.

The backend story:  Canada’s Freedom Convoy protestors points to a series of protests and blockades in Canada against COVID-19 vaccine mandates and restrictions, called the Freedom Convoy by organizers, began in early 2022. The convoys were joined by thousands of pedestrian protesters. Several offshoot protests blockaded provincial capitals and border crossings with the United States.

Canada’s Freedom Convoy protest attracted lot of attention because the protest paralyzed Canada’s Capital and shut down its busiest border.

Meanwhile, the protestors seem to have gathered funding support through cryptocurrencies.  A private class action law suit was initiated against the participants in Canada’s “Freedom Convoy”

The financial institutions consist of TD Canada Trust and ATB Financial.  The fundraising platforms also includes GoFundMe and GiveSendGo.  Digital asset platforms and exchanges which were listed were Bull Bitcoin, TallyCoin, BitBuy, Shakepay, Satoshi Portal, Bylls, Binance Smartchain, PancakeSwap and Nunchuk.

The Canadian National Police have sent letters to cryptocurrency exchanges requiring them to freeze nearly 34 crypto addresses, which is allegedly related to the Freedom Convoy protests under the Emergencies Act, which was recently invoked by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Consensus reported, “The funds in over 120 crypto addresses were ordered frozen by a special injunction by an Ontario court.”

The end story is that “Bitcoin Wallet Rejected Canada’s Court Demand to Freeze Funds citing it is Technically Impossible.”

So, the Nunchuk’s team stated the reasons for why they cannot freeze the Bitcoin Wallets: “We do not collect any user identification information beyond email addresses. We also do not hold any keys. Therefore,

  • We cannot ‘freeze’ our users’ assets.
  • We cannot ‘prevent’ them from being moved.
  • We do not have knowledge of ‘the existence, nature, value, and location’ of our users’ assets. This by design.”

The blacklisted crypto addresses are:  29 Bitcoin addresses; 4 Ethereum addresses; One address each of Cardano, Monero, and Litecoin.
