An Ohio man who stole $5 million worth of bitcoin from his former employer and spent it on luxury items has been sentenced to five years in federal prison.

Gary Harmon, 35, pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud in November 2022. He admitted that he used his access as a software engineer at a bitcoin exchange company to transfer bitcoin from the company’s accounts to his own personal wallets between 2019 and 2021.

According to court documents, Harmon used the stolen bitcoin to buy a Lamborghini, a Rolex watch, a diamond ring, and other expensive goods. He also posted photos of himself on social media with stacks of cash in a bathtub.

Harmon was arrested in June 2021 after the company discovered the theft and reported it to the FBI. Agents seized his assets and recovered about $1.8 million worth of bitcoin.

Harmon apologized for his actions and said he was “ashamed” of what he did. He also agreed to pay restitution to the company.

The judge who sentenced him said he was “stunned” by the amount of money Harmon stole and the way he flaunted it. He said Harmon’s crime was “a serious breach of trust” that harmed the company and its customers.

Bitcoin is a digital currency that operates on a decentralized network of computers. It is not controlled by any central authority or government. Bitcoin transactions are recorded on a public ledger called the blockchain, which makes them transparent and verifiable.

However, bitcoin also poses challenges for law enforcement and regulators, as it can be used for illicit activities such as money laundering, tax evasion, and cybercrime. The FBI and other agencies have been working to crack down on bitcoin-related fraud and theft.
