Fred Ehrsam triggers Conversation No more Bank Accounts just Crypto Wallets for Teens in 2021

Fred Ehrsam, previously co-founder at Coinbase expressed:  At some point, kids will stop opening bank accounts and just have crypto wallets.

Brian Armstrong expressed:  If fiat backed stablecoins really become inflation coins (not so stable), then how will we get a coin that is truly stable? Perhaps something that tracks a basket of real world goods (purchasing power parity) using oracles? Ideas welcome.

Balaji Srinivasan stated:  Two kinds of stablecoins. Fiat coins are pegged to an external fiat currency like USD, directly or indirectly. Flat coins are newer. If fiat itself starts to inflate, it isn’t really “stable”. So a flat coin optimizes instead for price flatness vs. an on-chain basket of goods.

Community response:  No. Modern auditing credit and credit scores. Without a bank account you have no access to building a credit score. Until this changes, nothing changes.

Traditional sources of credit become obsolete when anyone can stake, leverage and borrow on the blockchain.

And, is that the current reality of blockchain? No.

Not “at some point”. The future is NOW. I have three teens aged 13, 14 and 15 who do not yet qualify for a fully independent bank account but all have MetaMask and ask for their allowance in ETH.

Out of the three of them do any of them save the ETH? Or transfer it? Or buy other crypto with it or games?

This is my question. What does anyone really do with crypto, let alone teenagers? HODL, buy/shill jpeg, swap for other useless tokens in hopes to make money on curves, stake/yield farm with zero guaranteed return.

Gaming applications for sure have some natural crypto fit. I can see value there/appeal to kids even with my old brain. Crypto City? Like DAO replacing traditional government? Curious to see how that goes.

No expectations and not imposing our “old-brain” standards on the young is the key. Enjoy watching them coming up with uses we would not even think of. That said – we want our teens to save some of their money. How is HODLing different? They do what we taught them.

Swear if I had real money at that age I’d be a millionaire now. Some kids have their finger on the pulse of what’s smart to buy.  I’m trying to copy their investment strategy.

Which crypto wallet currently allows the youngest age to open an account? There are no such restrictions in crypto, age or otherwise. Unless you’re trying to buy on centralized exchanges (or if app stores implement some minimum age). Anyone can download Metamask, BRD, etc. Even if there was, you could always generate your own public/private key pair and circumvent a limit.

We are still so early. I mean the ignorance exposed here!
