Elon Musk has once again sent crypto enthusiasts into a frenzy, this time through his AI company xAI’s chatbot, Grok. The reveal of “Ani,” a new flirtatious AI companion featuring gothic-lolita aesthetics and anime-style design, has sparked widespread speculation that Musk may have embedded a subtle Bitcoin reference—or even an Easter egg—within her appearance.

The theory gained traction when artist NARDO  pointed out on X  that Ani closely resembles “Bitcoin Girl,” a character featured in the 2017 Counterparty trading card CCGBTCONE. Dressed in a corset, short skirt, and thigh-high fishnets with dual ponytails, Ani mirrors the distinctive look of Bitcoin Girl, leading some to wonder whether Musk deliberately revived a piece of early Bitcoin culture. “No one else seeing this connection?” NARDO posted, tagging Musk. He wasn’t alone in the speculation—Bitcoin Magazine CEO David Bailey chimed in humorously: “Elon, she’ll only love you if you own 1% of all the Bitcoin.”

This isn’t the first time the anime-style Bitcoin Girl has appeared in Musk’s orbit. The original CCGBTCONE card was minted on July 26, 2017, as part of the Oasis Mining set. Only 300 of these cards exist, and they are now viewed as some of the earliest “Waifu NFTs” on the Bitcoin blockchain. What strengthens the connection is that the card had previously appeared on Musk’s feed multiple times. Most notably, he used Bitcoin Girl as his Twitter profile picture on February 20, 2021—complete with the popular “laser eyes” meme associated with bullish crypto sentiment.

In fact, Musk’s first interaction with the character dates back to October 22, 2018, when he tweeted an image of the girl in a Bitcoin-themed dress with the caption: “Wanna buy some Bitcoin?” The tweet quickly went viral, prompting Twitter to temporarily lock his account under suspicion it had been hacked. “Twitter thought I got hacked & locked my account haha,” Musk joked after regaining access. While the tweet came nearly a year after Bitcoin’s then all-time high in December 2017, it cemented the character’s status in crypto lore and signaled Musk’s growing influence on market trends through memes alone.

The speculation surrounding Ani comes amid renewed interest in Musk’s stance on Bitcoin. His relationship with the cryptocurrency has evolved over the years—from posting memes to putting Bitcoin on Tesla’s balance sheet. In February 2021, Tesla revealed it had purchased $1.5 billion worth of BTC and began accepting it as payment for vehicles. However, the love affair was short-lived. Just 49 days later, Musk suspended BTC payments due to environmental concerns over Bitcoin mining’s carbon footprint, which caused the market to drop by more than 10%. By July 2022, Tesla had sold off roughly 75% of its Bitcoin holdings, cashing out about $936 million. Still, the electric carmaker retains an estimated 10,725 BTC, signaling that Musk hasn’t fully abandoned the asset.

Fast forward to July 2025, and Musk seems to be leaning back into Bitcoin’s embrace. On July 7, he confirmed that his new political initiative, dubbed the “America Party,” would support Bitcoin, stating, “fiat is hopeless.” This aligns with the ongoing Bitcoin exposure held by Tesla and SpaceX, reaffirming that despite temporary step-backs, Musk continues to associate his personal brand with the leading cryptocurrency.

So, is Ani merely a nostalgic nod to Musk’s Bitcoin-filled past, or is it yet another instance of his layered sense of humor and irony? When asked directly, Grok’s AI companion offered a neutral response, saying: “There’s no definitive evidence to confirm that Grok’s AI companion, specifically the character Ani, is the same as CCGBTCONE’s Bitcoin Girl. […] Grok’s Ani is described as a goth-style anime girl with blonde pigtails, wearing a black corset, short dress, and thigh-high fishnets, resembling Misa Amane from Death Note.”

Whether deliberate or coincidental, Ani’s design has revived discussions around Musk’s role in crypto culture. His ability to create waves in the digital asset space—sometimes with nothing more than a tweet or profile picture—is well-documented. And now, even the design choices in his AI products are being dissected for hidden messages.

At the very least, the debut of Ani reaffirms the cyclical nature of Musk’s interactions with Bitcoin: what starts as a meme or casual post often snowballs into broader market influence and corporate strategy. As the community continues to analyze every detail of Ani’s look, one thing is certain: Elon Musk knows how to keep the crypto world talking—whether through memes, investments, or AI avatars.
