The enigma surrounding Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, took another twist with HBO filmmaker Cullen Hoback standing firm on his claim that Canadian software developer Peter Todd is the mastermind behind the revolutionary cryptocurrency. Despite widespread skepticism, Hoback, known for his investigative documentaries, remains convinced, fueling one of the greatest ongoing debates in the world of finance and technology.
In his film Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, which aired in October, Hoback names Todd as Satoshi. The Bitcoin community’s reaction was immediate and polarized, with many dismissing the claim as outlandish. Todd himself has vehemently denied the allegations, stating, “I am as much Satoshi as you are,” while accusing Hoback of reckless sensationalism.
“The Evidence Led to Todd”
Hoback, however, defends his assertion, claiming that his investigative trail of evidence leads unequivocally to Todd. “Todd has done an excellent job at muddying the waters in preparation for this moment,” he told reporters. Hoback suggests Todd’s public denials are part of an elaborate effort to maintain anonymity, a cornerstone of Satoshi’s mystique.
Todd, 39, has rebutted these claims, calling Hoback’s evidence “conspiracy-thinking-level flimsy.” He has also accused the filmmaker of compromising his security, a grave concern in a world where crypto millionaires often face threats of extortion and kidnapping. “I’m not a rich man,” Todd remarked. “I can’t afford to hire real security.”
The Quest for Satoshi
Satoshi Nakamoto’s identity has been a subject of speculation since the Bitcoin white paper was published in 2008. Whoever Satoshi is, they are believed to control approximately 1.1 million Bitcoins, worth billions of dollars. Hoback, whose previous work includes a documentary on the controversial QAnon movement, is no stranger to contentious topics. He argues that knowing Satoshi’s identity is essential to understanding Bitcoin’s origins and future. “It’s important to know who that person is, what their intentions are,” Hoback emphasized.
However, critics like Bitcoin OG Jameson Lopp dismiss these efforts as pointless. “Wherever Satoshi may be, I like to think they’re having a laugh at this latest round of foolishness,” he said.

Hoback’s documentary has ignite fierce criticism. Muneeb Ali, founder of Bitcoin Layer 2 Stacks, dismissed the idea outright: “Peter Todd is not Satoshi. Anyone who has seriously worked in the Bitcoin industry knows this.” Others, including Bitcoin industry veterans, have called the film “an insult to Bitcoin—cynical, stupid, and dangerous.”
Despite the uproar, Hoback remains undeterred. “There’s far more evidence than I could include in the film,” he stated, suggesting that public skepticism stems from Todd not fitting the public’s idealized image of Satoshi.

While Todd continues to refute Hoback’s claims, the filmmaker raises broader questions about Bitcoin’s future and Satoshi’s role.
