The Cardano Foundation recently come up with a unique solution meant for supply chain traceability and anti-counterfeit solution in partnership with Scantrust.

For clarity, Scantrust is a well-connected goods and products platform, which provides digitalization for brand protection, supply chain traceability, and consumer engagement to Fortune 500 enterprises and also to small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in more than 168 countries worldwide.

The Cardano-Scantrust solution makes it possible for its brand owners to leverage traceability and targeted data functions made possible by Scantrust’s physical, secured QR codes in combination with the speed and low cost made possible by the Cardano blockchain for the supply chain traceability and anti-counterfeit use cases.

For clarity, supply chain traceability is the process by which the place of origin or the earliest known source of a product is traced through the journey from the very start of the supply chain through its end use.

In terms of sustainability, traceability facilitates the opportunity for a company to credibly verify their sustainability claims by proving their product’s source.

Counterfeit means imitating something that is authentic with the intention to steal, destroy, or replace the original for using it in illegal transactions or for the purposes of deceiving individuals into believing that the fake is of equal or greater value when compared to the real thing.

Anti-counterfeit use cases are important to protect the brand value. Counterfeiting is a serious problem for any manufacturer.

The Cardano-Scantrust application will work by connecting the metadata on the Cardano blockchain to unique and traceable Scantrust QR codes on products.

This method makes it possible for detailed data visualization – that data will be documented from every touch point and interaction along the product’s supply chain journey.

This is considered to be a great use case as it facilitates transparency to the supply chain.  Preserving brand value is considered to be very important because nearly 94% of consumers will be loyal to a brand which provides supply chain transparency. Also, consumers are also willing to pay up to 10% more for products which are coming from brands which provide them with a high degree of transparency with reference to the product origin.

Consumers want more information on the product which they purchase.  They are also interested in getting to know the way in which the brands document and present consumer data to consumer.

They are now using a proprietary and patented process which has been developed by Scantrust.  Further secured QR codes will be integrated on to products and thereby linking to metadata on the Cardano blockchain. The secured QR codes will also include a secure graphic which will give the standard QR codes’ anti-counterfeit features.
