Siacoin (SC) Skynet Sustained Upload Volume at 8 Gigabits Per Second

David Vorick expressed:  Quick Skynet status update: We’ve had an influx of usage over the past two days, total sustained upload volume is now sustaining 8 gigabits per second, all coming from the US. This can be compared to ~1 gigabit per second just 2 days ago.

This sudden, sustained spike of activity is putting a lot of pressure on our servers, causing uploads to often fail for US customers. Other regions like EU appear unaffected. We’re working through the issue now. Other functions such as download and skydb usage appear unaffected.

Update: did some digging and it’s a person or group of people using the ISP NetProtect to spam our upload endpoint. Unclear if it’s an attack or just an attempt to subvert ratelimits but they have multiple /16 blocks, so per-IP ratelimits don’t work. Maybe we ban the entire /16.

Community response:  Is there a skapp or piece of content that’s gone a little viral? No it’s a particular attacker using a bunch of secure VPNs to upload massively in parallel.

Otherwise titbits of updates:  Skynet can now run all IPFS applications, can do DNSLink, and can run all Gatsby applications. Web3 has never been easier.

It is important to note, IPFS compatibility doesn’t just apply to Homescreen, any IPFS application can now be successfully loaded onto Skynet and will work natively, without requiring any code changes.

For improved clarity, the upgrades extend beyond IPFS. They have been working hard to support an increasingly wide set of familiar frameworks, including things like Gatsby and React. Thus, every application that is built using Gastby will work with no changes when deployed to Skynet.

This is more than what is possible with IPFS. Also, users have been reporting that Skynet provides better speeds, uptime, and reliability than centralized services like Netlify.

Also, they have upgraded Skynet to fully support DNSLink. It will be possible to host applications and websites on Skynet, and to further point to them from traditional domain names, providing users with an experience which looks and feels like web2, but in reality it gets the benefits of web3.

Gatsby is a framework for static applications, it is based on tricks from the server to support things like 404 pages and error pages. In the beginning when they launched Skynet 2 years ago, they had no idea how to support the different features, but they were able to deal with the challenges as they began filling their tool kit.
